We did, however, read where a good joke was going around Louisiana just before the run off: Gubernatorial candidates David Duke and Edwin Edwards, and televangelist Jimmy Swaggart were in a helicopter over the Gulf of Mexico when it went down. Who was saved? Tlie state of Louisiana. What's happening: Tlie board of the Foothills Humane Society will meet today at 4 p.m. in the NCNB meeting room. Spartanburg County District 1 Supt. of Schools,. Dr. Little field, will speak to the Landrum High PTSA on parents' role in their child's academic perfor mance. The meeting will be held tonight at 7 at the school. The Polk County Board of Commissioners meets at 3 p.m. (Continued On Back Page) TRYON. N C 28782 Police Dept. Commended The Landrum Police Depart ment was commended for its recent handling of an armed robbery at Fast Fare. Crown Central Petroleum Co. wrote the mayor a letter expressing its gratitude for the Landrum Police Department's work and investigation into the case. The letter said that the company was impressed with the Landrum policemen's response time and conduct throughout the investigation and final anest. In other police news, Chief Gary Laughter reported $400-$500 worth of damage done to vandalized cars at Lan drum High School. The department collected $4,583 in fines for the month, issued 43 citations, 10 speeding tickets, 2 shopliftings, 2 break ing and entering, 1 armed rob bery (Fast Fare), 6 assault and battery, 5 disorderly conduct, 2 under the influence. —C. Wharton Converse College Wind Ensemble In Concert Tlie Converse College Wind Ensemble will present a concert on Thursday evening, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. at Twitchell Audito rium. The second half will feature marches, including Gershwin's "Strike Up The Band." The public is invited to this free concert. This exciting group is under the baton of Wilbert K. Kimple, director, and is cer tainly worth the short trip to Spartanburg. MONDAY, NOV. 18,1991 Arvle Bennett Resigns As Coach Arvie Bennett, head football coach at Landrum High School for the past three years has resigned his position. His plans arc to remain at Landrum High School as a PE teacher where he is in his 7th year of teaching. Even though Bennett's 1991 season was 0-9 he had only 2 of his players to quit the team. Steve Coley, Athletic Director at LHS said "Arvie was not asked or pressured to resign his position as head football coach." Coley also stated that "he felt the boys that partici pated had an excellent learning experience with Arvie being their coach because of his posi tive attitude." As Bennett resigned, he said "when I took over the head coaching position if I felt I (Continued On Back Page) 2I>C Per t ops Polk Men In State Finals In spite of sleet, strong winds, and biting cold, the Wolverines hit the road running at the state 1A/2A cross country finals and did themselves proud. Polk County's top seven runners competed against the best from eleven other schools across the state and finished third with 94 points. First and second place awards went to Manteo (71) and Murphy (83). Leading the Wolverines was sophomore runner Seth Peoples, who placed sixth overall in a field of 92 competitors. His time of 16.32 established a new persona] record as well as a new school record for the 5k. Peoples also was named to the All-State team, the only tenth grader receiving the honor. In spite of breathing problems due to the cold, Chad Lanford fought his way to the finish line in 17:06, taking the lucky 13 spot. Lanford said after the race that he got dizzy around the one-mile mark but he wasn't about to quit. "He's a runner with lots of heart," said Coach Alan Peoples. Always a strong competitor, Rob Phillips finished in 1719 and placed 21st. The remaining Wolverines each set a new per- sonal record: Scott Culbreth ^^ 6 -29lh), Jas °n Denton Jeff Combs (18.52-69th), and Eric Bauni- berger (18:53-70111).
